TheuseofPOSS(polyhedraloligomericsilsesquioxanes)asaflameretardantadditiveincorporatedintopolymericmatriceshascurrentlybecometobeanissueofinterest,whatevertheresearchordevelopmentisconcerned.TheorganicligandsattachedtothesiliconatomsattheverticesofthepolyhedralcageweremodifiedforthepreparationofOPS(octaphenyl-silsequioxane)andOVS(octavinyl-silsequioxane)inthelaboratory.WithfocusontheflameretardanteffectofPOSS-derivativesontheEPDMresin,thestudyonEPDM(ethylene-propylene-diene-monomerrubber)/OPSorEPDM/OVScompositeswasengagedinthiswork.ItshowsthatthenanoscopicPOSS-derivativesdidundergoanimportantactionintheflameretardationofEPDMonthebasisofthecharacterizationresults,likethermalbehavior,flammabilityandmechanicalpropertiesaswell.ItisconfirmedthatincontrasttothetypicalintumescentsystemofEPDM/APP/PERtheEPDM/OPS/APP/PERcompositehasexhibitedoutstandingperformancesinbothLimitingOxygenIndexandmechanicalproperties.Thismayprobablyberelevanttotheimprovedqualityofcarbonaceouscharattheend.
