Ourstudycomparesrubberfromvariouscandidatecropstoprovideabaselinefordevelopmentstrategies.Wehavemeasuredthemolecularcharacteristicsofrubberfromalternativespecies,andfromHeveaandsyntheticpolyisoprene.NewrubbercropslikeguayuleproducepolymersofthesamestereochemistryandsimilarmolecularweighttothatofHevea.HeveaNRvulcanizateshaveexceptionalperformanceproperties(e.g.greenstrength,tensilestrength,crack-growthresistance)comparedtosynthetics.Decadesofadvancesinagriculture,processing,compounding,anddesignhavedevelopedtechnologiesoptimizedtoindustrialexploitationofthisvitalmaterial.Effectiveutilizationofalternativenaturalrubbermaterialswillrequirelearningcurvesintheseandothertechnologies.
