Smarttextilesareabletosenseelectrical,thermal,chemical,magnetic,orotherstimulifromtheenvironmentandadaptorrespondtothembyusingfunctionalitiesintegratedintotextilestructures.Theprimaryaimofthisstudywastodemonstratethatcommercialelasticfibrescouldbeconvertedtoactassensingfibres.Thiswasachievedthroughtheformationofthinpolyanilinelayerscoatedonthepolyurethanefibresbyinsituchemicaloxidativepolymerizationmethod.Thesurfaceandthecross-sectionmorphologyoftheresultingfibreswereobservedbySEM,whichshowedthatpolyanilineparticleswerein-homogeneouslydistributedonsurfacesofpolyurethanefibres.Theconductivityoftheresultingfibresincreasedgreatlywithincreasingofthicknessofpolyanilinelayers,anddecreasedwithincreasingtemperatureandexhibitedalinearresponsefrom0to60°С.Straindeformationbehaviourofthefibreswasdetectedthroughapplyingacertainstrainandtrackingtheconductivitychange.Thesimulationsperformedonthisstructureshowedaverygoodlinearityoverawiderangeofappliedstrainfrom5%to400%.Theresponsesonthetemperatureandstrainsensingpropertieswereattributedtothechangesofthegrainresistanceofthepolyanilineparticlesandgrainboundaryresistanceinducedbyadequateexternalstimulus.
