Multi-walledcarbonnanotubes(MWNTs)wereoxidizedwithconcentratedHNO3andH2SO4tointroducecarboxylicgroups.Graftingofpoly(ethyleneglycol)(PEG)ontocarbonnanotubes(MWNTs-g-PEG)wasachievedbythedirectcondensationreactionofcarboxylgroupsontheacids-treatedcarbonnanotubessurfacewithhydroxylgroupsofPEGusingN,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide(DCC)and4-dimethylaminopyridine(DMAP)asacondensingagent.Then,Ce4+/hydroxylredoxsysteminitiatedacrylonitrile(AN)fromMWNTs-g-PEGtogetpoly(ethyleneglycol)-bpolyacrylonitrile(PEG-b-PAN)blockcopolymerfunctionedMWNTs[MWNTs-g-(PEG-b-PAN)]undertheacidiccondition.As-preparedblockcopolymerfunctionalizedMWNTswerecharacterizedwithFTIR,TEMandTGA.TGAsuggestedthatthegraftedratiooftheblockcopolymerontheMWNTs.Itcouldbeobservedthatthepolymershellisvividlyimpingedontheouterwallalongthetubes.ThedispersionexperimentsshowedthatthesolubilityofthemodifiedMWNTsinDMFhadbeenimprovedgreatly.
