Itiswell-knownthatthetensilestrengthsofcarbonfibresarelimitedmainlybyaspectrumofdefectswhicharedistributedrandomlyalongthefibrelength[1].Thesizeeffect,i.e.inversedependenceoftensilestrengthonsamplesize,iswidelyacceptedbecausetheprobabilityofencounteringasevereflawbecomesgreaterasthesamplesizeincreases[2].Ingeneral,thesourcesoffailurerelydirectlyonthefibreweaknessordefects,anditcanbeinvestigatedbymeansofmicroscopy[3].Therearemanybasicworksoncarbonfibrewithmicroscopy.ThesizesanddistributionsofinternalflawshavealsobeendeterminedbySharpetalbyusinghigh-voltageelectronmicroscopy[4].Reynolds-SharptheoryhasbeenverifiedbyJohnsonetalbuSEMboservationoffracturesurfaceofcarbonfibers.Johnesanalysisithetypesandnumbersofflwasofcarbonfibersfrommesophasepitch.
