Elastic/viscoelasticorviscoelastic/viscoelasticbi-materialinterfacesexistinmanypolymericmatrixcompositematerials.Bondingstrengthbetweenpolymermatrixandreinforcingphase(fibers,particulates,etc.)playsanimportantroleinoverallpropertiesofcompositesandmeasurementofinterfaceandpredictingdamageandfailureofcomposites.Inthispresentation,anewinnovativetestmethodincludingspecimendesign,testprocedureandaniterativecalculationalgorithmisdevelopedformoreaccuratedeterminationofthebondingstrengthofbi-materialinterfaces.Acylindricalspecimenoftwobulkmaterialswithasphericalinterfaceisdesigned.Througheitheranalyticalorfiniteelementnumericalanalysesitisfoundthatforagivenbi-materialinterface,thereexistsacriticalbondinganglevalueatthefreeedgeofthesphericalbi-materialinterface.Ifthebondingangleisdesignedtobelessthanthiscriticalvalue,interfacestresssingularitycanbeeliminatedwhenthespecimenisunderanycombinedtensileandtorsionalloadings.Twotypesofbi-materialinterfacesareconsideredinthisstudy:interfacebetweenelasticandviscoelasticmaterials(aluminum/epoxy),andbetweenviscoelasticandviscoelasticmaterials(epoxy/polyvinylchloride).Interfacestrengthtestsarecarriedoutwiththedesignedspecimenunderpuretensile,puretorsionalandvariouscombinationofthetensileandtorsionalloadingcases.Foreachcase9thefailureloadlevelisrecorded.Duetoeliminationofthestresssingularity,interfacenormalandshearstressdistributionsalongthesphericalinterfaceatthefailureloadlevelcanbemoreaccuratelydeterminedthroughfiniteelementviscoelasticanalysis.Andaniterativecalculationtechniqueisdevelopedtofindthebi-axialnormal-shearbondingstrengthenvelopeforeachtypeofbi-materialinterfaces.Ithasbeendeterminedthatfortheepoxy/aluminuminterfaceandfortheepoxy/polyvinylchlorideinterfaces,theirstrengthenvelopcanbeexpressedas:
