Aswidelyusedthermosettingpolymers,epoxyresinshaveseveraluniquecharacteristics,highadhesivestrength,highstrengthandhardness,excellentchemicalandheatresistance.Epoxieshavebeenwidelyusedinvariousindustrialapplications,particularlyasadhesivesforbondingandasmatrixresinsforproducinghigh-performancefibrereinforcedcomposites.However,mostcuredepoxysystemsshowlowfracturetoughness,poorresistancetocrackinitiationandpropagation,andinferiorimpactstrength.Researchshowsnano-particlessuchasnanosilica,halloysite,nanoclay,andnanotubecanreinforcefracturetoughnessoftheepoxy.Whennano-particlesareusedasmodifiersinepoxies,ahomogeneousdispersionisrequiredinordertoachievethenano-phasestructure.Astheparticlestendtoagglomerate,specialtechniqueshavehadtobedevelopedandusedtoachieveahomogeneousparticledistribution,includingphysicalandchemicalmethods.Inthisstudy,weexperimentallyreportthesimplemethodtoenhancedfracturetoughnessofepoxycompositesbyusingasmallamountofcommercialisedfunctionalnanosilicabymechanicalmixing.Nanosilicaswithaminoandepoxidefunctionalgroupsshowstronginterfacesinepoxycompositestosuppressaggregationandenhanceresin-wettability,furtherenhancedfracturetoughnessofepoxycomposites.Comparedwithpreviousresearch,toachievethesameKICvaluesorsimilarenhancementratio,smallamountofnanosilicacontentisneeded.Duetocommercialavailabilityandcheappriceofrawmaterialandsimplefabricationmethod,thosesystemshavethescale-uppotential.
