Polypropylene(PP)/organolayereddoublehydroxides(LDH)/zincborate(BZn)compositesandPP/organo-sepiolite(SEP)/zincborate(BZn)compositeswerepreparedbythemeltblendingmethod.TheflammabilitypropertiesandthermalstabilitywerestudiedusingTGA,conecalorimeter,limitingoxygenindex(LOI)andtheUL94protocol.TheonsettemperatureandthermaldecompositiontemperatureofthePP/organo-LDHandPP/organo-LDH/zincboratecompositeshavenosignificantchangecomparedtopristinePP,buttheamountofnonvolatileresidueremainingat6000CissignificantlyhigherthanthatinpurePP.Theconecalorimetricresultsshowa38%reductioninthepeakheatreleaserateforPP/IO%BZnand48%,50%and63%reductionsforPP/organo-LDH/IO%BZncompositesat3%,5%and10%organo-LDHloading.TheLOIofallsamplesincreasebyaslightamountandallsamplescanobtainaUL-94HBrating.ThecharcontentofPP/LDH/BZnandPP/BZn/organo-LDHcompositesismuchgreaterthanthatofPP/LDH,PP/BZnandPP/organo-LDH.ThefireretardancyofPPwasgreatlyimprovedbytheintroducingofOSEPandBZn.ThereductionofPHRRofPP/BZncompositeswith10%BZnloadingisonly62%,butwhichis78%forPP/OSEP/BZnwithio%organo-sepioliteand10%BZn.FireperformanceindexofPP/OSEP/BZncompositeincreasedt00.045s.m2/kWfrorri0.03s.rr12/kWofPP/BZncompositesand0.014s.m2/kWofpristinePP.TheaveragemasslossrateofPP/OSEP/BZncompositesdecreasedt012.Ig/(s.m2)from30.Ig/(s.m2)ofpristinePP,whilesmokeproductionratedecreasedby36.8%from0.117m2/sofpristinePPt00.074m2/sofPP/OSEP/BZn.Thecharresidueofcompositesincreasedfrom0.6%ofpristinePPt012.19%ofPP/OSEP/BZncomposites.ThelimitingoxygenindexofthePP/OSEP/BZncompositesincreasedby3.7from17.IofpristinePPt020.80fcomposites.
