Rollingresistancecontributest06-10%oftheoverallfuelconsumptionofvehicles.Littleisunderstoodontherelationshipbetweenrollingresistanceandsurfacecharacteristicssuchasadhesion,surfaceasperitiesandtopology.Currently,thedevelopmentoftirematerialsisbasedonacorrelationbetweenrollingresistanceandtheviscoelasticpropertiesoftherubbercompound,particularlythelossfactor,tan8.Surfaceandsub-surfacephenomenaarenottakenintoaccount.Thisstudyaimstoelucidatethemechanismsofcontrollingrollingresistanceofpolymeryarnsandfabricsbyalteringsurfacecharacteristicsandmechanicalpropertiesofavarietyofmicro-andnano-scalefibersandyarnsthatcanbeappliedfornext-generationtireapplications.Achangeinbendingstiffnessoffibrousstructurescriticallyinfluencestheabilityoffiberstomeanderthroughsurfaceasperities,thusalteringtheadhesionandrollingresistanceofmaterials.Thispaperfocusesonthecorrelationbetweenrollingresistanceandadhesionproperty.Includingdifferentfibrousmembranes(polyvinylidenefluoride,polycaprolactoneandnylon6)preparedbyelectrospinning,andthreekindsofcommercialwovenfabrics(carbonfibers,glassfibersandKevlarfibers)aretested.Therollingresistanceismeasuredusingaswingingpendulumcl],andshowsaconsistentlypositivecorrelationbetweenrollingresistanceandadhesionenergyC2].Thefactorofdampedoscillationtakesaccountfortheviscouspropertiesofthematerialandstiffnesscorrespondingtotheelasticcharacteristicofthematerialwillbedivulged.Otherpropertieslikestorageandlossmodulus(E‘andE″)willbereported.
