Thermoplasticpolyurethaneelastomerstypicallyconsistoftwosegregatedphases,anelasticphaseandahardphase.Theelasticphaseshouldbethecontinuousphasethatimpartsoverallelastomericpropertiestothepolyurethane.Thedispersedhardphaseprovidesphysicalcrosslinksthatenablereversibleelasticproperties.Viscoelasticresponsecanoccurbecausethepolarfunctionalgroupscanaddatimedependentreversiblestrain.Viscousflowmayoccurduetoslippageofthehardblockhydrogenbondedlinks.Thepolyether-polyurethanesaregenerallymoreelasticthanthepolyester-polyurethanes.Fillerisoftenaddedtotheseelastomerstoincreasestiffnessandabrasionresistance.Thefillershoulddecreasecreeporstressrelaxation,buttheeffectonglasstransitiontemperatureiscomplexbecauseofthemorphologyasshownbydifferentialscanningcalorimetry[1].Polyurethanenanocompositeshavebeenpreparedfromthermoplasticandthermosettingpolyurethanes.Withthethermosettingtypethefillerisoftendispersedinoneofthereactants,usuallythepolyolandthencrosslinkedwiththeisocyanate.Thesol-gelprocesshasbeenusedtosynthesisthefillersinsituinbothtypesofpolyurethanes[2].
