Trucksandbuses,likeothervehicles,consumeenergyinordertoovercomeresistancetomotion.Ithasbeenfoundthatonaverage,aboutonethirdofthatresistancecomesfromtherollingresistanceoftyresandtheremainderfromaerodynamicdragandfrommechanicalfriction.Variouspartsofthetyrecontributetotheoverallrollingresistance,butthetreadaccountsforatleasthalfofit.Thisiswhyoureffortsatreducingrollingresistanceandthereforereducingoverallhydrocarbonconsumptionhavebeenfocusedonthetreadcompounds.Thereasontyrescreaterollingresistanceisthatsomeoftheenergygoingintodeformthetyreasitrotatesagainsttheroadsurface,isconvertedtoheat.Thisphenomenonisknownashysteresis,andrubbercompoundscanbewellcharacterizedforthispropertybymeasuringthetanδ,thatistheratioofG``toG`,inadynamicmechanicaltest.Wehavefoundthatthepeaktanδinastrainsweepat10Hzand70°C,correlateswellwithmeasuredtyrerollingresistanceforarangeofdifferenttreadcompounds
