Sulfonatedpoly(etheretherketone)(SPEEK)iscurrentlyconsideredtobeoneofthemostpotentialcandidatesofNafion@protonexchangemembranescl].AlthoughtheSPEEKexhibitshighprotonconductivity,itstillhasrelativelyhighmethanolpermeabilityandlowmechanicalproperties.TobalancetherelationshipbetweenprotonconductivityandmethanolbarrierandmechanicalpropertiesinSPEEK,wepreparedcompositeprotonexchangemembranescomposedofSPEEKandmulti-walledcarbonnanotubes(MWNTs)coatedbysilica(Si02).InsulatingSi02shellwascoatedonthestiffMWNTsbymeansofasimplesol-gelmethodandthenthecore/shellstructuredMWNTs@Si02wasembeddedinSPEEKmatrixtoaffordahomogeneouscompositemembrane.Thecore/shellstructureofMWNTs@Si02wasconfirmedthroughTEMandtheSi02coatingcontentwasabout40wt%determinedbyTGA.ComparedtoapureSPEEKmembrane,theMWNTs@Si02dopinginthemembranesledtoahigherthermalstabilityandglasstransitiontemperature(Tg)asrevealedbyTGAandDSC.WateruptakeandoxidativestabilityweresignificantlyincreasedbyincreasingtheMWNTs@Si02content.Moreover,thetensilestrengthandmethanolpermeabilityofcompositemembraneswereimprovedeffectivelyastheMWNTs@Si02contentlessthan2wt%.WhentheMWNTs@Si02contentincreasedt05wt%,thecompositemembranestillhasaconsiderableconductivityat0.058S/cmcomparedtothenafion117@.Thiscompositemembranewillbeapromisingcandidatefordirectmethanolfuelcellsapplications.
