Wehaveinvestigatedstructuraldevelopmentinafilmofpoly(ethylene-octane)co-polymer(Engage8150,Mw=106000g/mol,Mw/Mn=1.9,andbranchdensityof9-C8H17unitsper1000backbonecarbons)duringuniaxialstretchingbyconductingsimultaneouslythetensilestress-strainmeasurementandsynchrotronsmallangleX-rayscattering(SAXS).Step-cycletensiledeformationexperimentsgivingtruestress-straincurveswerecarriedout.Theycombineastepwisestretchingofthesampleswithloading-unloadingcycles.Theimposedstrainsweredecomposedintoanelastic(recoverable)partanda(quasi)permanentpart.Studyofthemicroscopicbehaviordemonstratedthatelasticpartincreasewithstrainincreasing,andamaximumplateauvalueisreachedatHenckystrainofabout0.95,whichdenotesastrainwherefibrillationsetsinasreportedrepeatedly.Atalowerstrain,thecrystallinelamellaeinclinetothestretchingdirectionandtheamorphousregionsareelasticallyexpandedwiththefilmdrawing.Intheintermediatedeformationrange,stress-inducedlamellaemeltingandrecrystallizationtakesplace.Thenewlyformedlamellarcrystallitesperpendicularlythestretchingdirectionhaveasmallerlongperiod.Above0.95strain,thelamellarstructuretransformstothemicrofibrillaronealongtothestretchingdirection,assuggestedbyappearanceofthetransversalstreak.Interestingly,thehorizontallongperiodgraduallydecreasewithstrainanditsvaluesonlydependonthetruestrain.
