Wehereinreporttheinfluenceofgrapheneoncrystallizationbehaviorofpoly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL).EpitaxialgrowthofPCLonthebasalplaneofgraphenesheetswasobservedusingtransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM)viaacontrolledsolutioncrystallizationmethodshowninFigure1.BiodegradablePCL/graphenenanocompositeswithvariousgrapheneloadingwerepreparedviaasolutionmixingmethod.Nonisothermalcrystallizationbehaviorofthesenanocompositeswasstudiedusingadifferentialscanningcalorimeter(DSC).Figure2showstheDSCcoolingtracesforneatPCLanditsnanocompositesduringthenonisothermalmeltcrystallizationat10°C/min.ItcanbeseenfromFigure2thatTcisaround25°CforneatPCL;however,Tcsshiftsupwardto31°C,34°Cand36°Cwiththegraphenecontentincreasingfrom0.1to1.0wt.%,indicatingthatthepresenceofgrapheneenhancedsignificantlythenonisothermalmeltcrystallizationofPCLinthenanocompositesrelativetoneatPCL.ThenucleationeffectofgrapheneonPCLwasinvestigatedbyPOMobservation.Figure3ashowstheisothermalcrystallizationofneatPCLat48°Cfrom0to4hours,contrastingthePCL/graphene0.1wt.%nanocompositesshowninFigure5b.InterpretationofthePOMresultsgivenclearlysuggestedthestrongnucleationeffectofgraphene,whichwasinagreementwithDSCconclusions.
