Thispaperdescribedaone-dimensionalcylindernumericalmodelofheatandmoisturetransferinacylindersheathedbyhigh-propertyrefractoriesundertheintenseheatfluxorfireexposure.Bio-heattransferequationandHenriquesburnskinequationwereintroducedtopredictsecond-degreeskinburninjuriesbasedonthenumericalmodel.Acylindricalthermalprotectiveperformancetestingdevicewasusedtomeasurethedistributionoftemperature.Theeffectsofmoisturecontentonthethermalprotectiveperformancewerealsodiscussed.Theaimofthisstudywastopredictthethermalprotectiveperformanceofflame-resistantrefractoriesundertheintensiveheatfluxorfire.Twosetsofhigh-propertyrefractories,whichwereoftenusedforfirefighterclothing,wereselectedtoverifytheaccuracyofmodel.Foursetsofexperimentswereconductedbasedontheformerfindings.Theperformanceoftherelatedmodelshadbeenevaluatedbycomparingthepredictedvalueswiththerespectiveexperimentalvalues.Resultsshowedthatthepredictedvaluesfromthenumericalmodelsapproachsatisfactorilytheexperimentalresults.Therefore,thepredictedmodelcanbeusedtospecifythelevelofprotectionneededinagarmentwhentheintensityoftheexposurehazardisknown.Also,thetestwillbeespeciallyusefulfordevelopingnewmaterialsandselectingcandidatesforadditionalfieldtesting.
