Thermogravimetryanalysis(TG)techniquehasbeenperformedforevaluatingthethermaldegradationandthekineticsparametersofPoly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide)(PPTA)fiberfrom25to900℃undernitrogenandairatmosphere.ThedecompositionrateandthecharacteristictemperaturesareachievedfromboththeTGandDTGcurves.ThethermaldegradationofKevlarfiberfollowsmorethanonemechanism.ThedifferentmethodshavebeenintroducedtodescribethedegradationkineticsofPPTAfiber.Therespectiveactivationenergy,reactionorderandthepreexponentialfactorofthedegradationofPPTAareachieved.TheresultsshowthattheactivationenergyandreactionorderofPPTAarehigherinnitrogenthaninair,whichmeansthatthethermostabilityofthefiberdependsnotonlyonitsnativecharacter,butalsoonthetestingatmosphere.Thethermostablepropertiesofthesefibersinnitrogencanbeusedtoreflecttheirnaturalcharacterwithouttheconcurrentthermooxidativeeffect.Thekineticparametersbasedondifferentanalyticalapproachtakenintheanalysesaresummarizedforcomparativepurposes.Thecorrelationcoefficient,largerthan0.996,wasobtainedthroughtheCoats-Redfernmethod.TheTGcurvesofPPTAfiberappeartobethebestfitfortheCoats-Redfernequation.Obviously,combiningdifferentmathematicalmethodsconducedtosolvethecomplexthermaldegradationofPPTAfiber.
