Inrecentyears.thermoplasticcompositesreinforcedwithnaturalcellulosefibershavebecomesignificantlypopularduetotheecologicalawarenessandenvironmentalconcernsoversyntheticmaterials.However,theelementaryunitofcellulosecontainsthreehydroxylgroups,whichrendersfibershydrophiliccl].Onthecontrary,mostofthethermoplasticpolymeric.matricesusedforcompositessuchaspolyethylene(PE),polypropylene(PP),etc.havemodestcohesiveenergiesandarehighlyhydrophobic.Themaindrawbacksintheuseofcellulosefiberswithoutmodificationinthermoplasticsarethepoorcompatibilitybetweenhydrophilicfibersandthehydrophobicsubstrate,andtheinherenthighmoisturesorptionwhichcouldcausedeformationofthefibers.Aneasyapproachtoaddressthisproblemistohydrophobic-modifythecellulosefiber.Inthiswork,polymerlatexbearingflexiblepolymericchainswithlowglasstransitiontemperature(Tg)andcore-shellstructurewasusedforthesurfacetreatmentofcellulosefibersc2].Thetougheningofcellulosefiber-reinforcedPPwasperformedviaadsorbingthecationicpolymericlatexontosulfiteandchemithermomechanicalpulp(CTMP)fibersasreinforcements,whichprovidesanovelapproachforrenderingthesurfaceofcellulosefibreselastomericandhydrophobic.Themechanical,morphologicalandthermalpropertiesoftheresultingbiocomposites,containingupt040wt%ofthemodifiedcellulosefibers,wereinvestigated.TheresultsshowedthatwiththeincreaseofthelatexdosageuptoIand2wt%(ondryfibers)forsulfitepulpandCTMPrespectively,theimpact,tensileandflexuralstrengthsofthemodifiedfibre/PPbiocompositesweresignificantlyincreased.ThetougheningmechanismwasdiscussedbasedontheretardingofcrackpropagationandthepromotingofcrystallizationofPPmatrix(asrevealedbyDSCcharacterization).Theoverallperformanceofthebiocompositedemonstratedthatcationiclatex-modifiedcellulosefibreisveryeffectiveinreinforcingthermoplastic-basedbiocompositesalongwiththesynergeticeffectonenhancingcrystallinityofpolymermatrix.
