Therecycledpoly(ethyleneterephthalate)(rPET)usedasanalternativereinforcingmaterialforinsitumicrofibrillar-reinforcedpolyethylene(PE)basedcompositefibers,comparedwithliquidcrystallinepolymer(LCP),wasinvestigated.TheneatPEanditscompositesreinforcedwithLCPandrPETmicrofibrilsunderthecompatibilizingpromotionof5wt%styrene-(ethylenebutylene)-styrene-graftedmaleicanhydride(SEBS-g-MA)compatibilizer,werepreparedasfiberusinghotdrawingprocess.Cross-PlylaminatesoftheneatPEandthecompatibilizedcompositefiberswerethenpreparedusingfilmstackingmethod.Tensile,flexuralandimpactperformancesofeachlaminatesystemwereexaminedandcompared.Undertensileloading,nosignificantdifferenceintheintialpartofthestress-straincurvesandhencetensilemodulusamongalllaminateswasobserved.Thedifferencewasseenonlyinthefinalpartofthecurves.Underflexuralloading,however,cleardifferencewasseen.TheflexuralmoduliofthecompatibilizedLCP-andrPET-compositeslaminatesweremuchhigherthanthatoftheneatPElaminate.Interestingly,thecompatibilizedrPET-compositelaminateshowedmuchbetterimpact-resistancecomparedwithPE-compositesandcompatibilizedLCP-Iaminates.TheobtainedresultsdemonstratedthehighpotentialuseoftherPET-compositefiberlaminateinimpact-resistantapplication.
