Cracksinintrinsicself-mendingpolymerscanbehealedasaresultofcrossoverinterconnectionofreversiblecovalentbondsatthebrokenfaces.Typicalreversiblecovalentbondsservedasbasisforself-healingofstructuralmaterialsareDiels-Alder(DA)interactions[l].Generally,re-mendingofhardsolidmaterialexhibitinggoodmechanicalpropertiesatroomtemperaturehastobeheatedaboveitsTgforfacilitatingmolecularmovementandmass(monomer)transportationtodamagedareas.Thismendingprocesswouldinevitablydistortmaterial‘sshapeasaresultofmolecularcleavageanddrasticallyincreasedeformabilityduetoglasstransition[2].Itisworthnotingthatdistortionofend-useproductsisnotallowedforstructuralapplicationswheremechanicalstrengthpropertiesarecriticalevenifself-healingisproceeding.Tosolvethisproblem,weintroduceanovelhealingmechanismbyemployingalkoxyaminemoietiesasintermolecularlinkstocrosslinkpolystyrene,polyurethaneandepoxy.Uponheatingtocertainhomolysistemperature,covalentC-ONbondfissionandradicalrecombinationsynchronouslytakeplaceamongalkoxyaminemoieties.Crackedpartswerethusreconnectedrepeatedlyinasingle-stepfashion(ratherthanthetwo-steponeinthecaseofDAreaction),withoutlosingintegrityandloadbearingabilityofthematerialevenaboveTg.Moreover,thehealingcanbeconductedwithinawidetemperaturerangebytailoringthespatialandelectroniceffectsofalkoxyaminesunits.Itisfoundthatthespecialdesignedpolymerscanrepeatedlyself-healcrackswithoutdeformationinducedbychainscission,andprovidethepolymerwithmechanicalstabilityatelevatedtemperatureaswell.Molecularstructuresofalkoxyaminesmoieties,aswellasthermodynamicbehaviorofC-ONbondsscissionandrecombination,etc.,arestudiedindetailstooptimizeself-healingbehaviorofthepolymers.
