Textilefiberreinforcedthermoplasticcompositesareincreasinglyusedformanufacturinghigh-performancelight-weightstructuresin,forinstance,theaerospaceandautomotiveindustry.Sincetheviscosityofthermoplasticpolymermeltsistoohigh,apoorimpregnationormoldfillwouldbehappened.Inordertomanufacturelarger,thickerandmoreintegratedthermoplasticcompositesthancurrentlycanbeachievedbymeltprocessing,avacuumassistedresintransfermolding(VARTM)iscurrentlybeingdevelopedusingareactivethermoplasticpolymercalledanionicpolyamide-6(APA-6).Naturalfiber,asakindoflowcost,lightweight,highspecificstrengthandstiffness,andnaturaldegradationofenvironment-friendlymaterial,usedinreinforcedcompositesiswidelyconcerned.However,nonaturalfiberreinforcedreactivethermoplasticpolymergradeshavebeenpreparedsofar.Throughourpreviousstudies,itwasdemonstratedthattherewasastronginteractionbetweenthelargenumberofhighlyreactivehydroxylonthesurfaceofcelluloseandtheinitiatorofAPA-6,whichresultinincompletepolymerizationwhenputtogether.Inordertosolvetheproblem,amethodwasadoptedbyusinganew-styleinitiatorcalledcaprolactammagnesiumbromide,whichhaslowerreactivityandweakeralkalineduetothefactthatitscationislargerandlessacidic,thuslimitedthereactionwiththehydroxylgroupsonthecellulose.itwouldmarkedlyreducetheconsumptionoftheinitiator.Asaresult,theroleofinhibitorhasbeensignificantlyimproved.FollowingramiefiberfabricreinforcedAPA-6compositeswithanaveragethicknessof2.5mmwaspreparedbyVARTM.Thesoxhletextractionanddifferentialscanningcalorimeter(DSC)measurementsrespectivelysuggestedthedegreeofconversionandcrystallizationofcompositeswas94%and50%.Remarkableimprovementofmechanicalpropertieswasachievedthroughdynamicmechanicalanalysis(DMA)andthree-pointbendingtest.Favorableinterfacialadhesionandwettabilitywererevealedbyscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)observation.Thevoidcontentandfiberfractionofcompositesweremeasuredbydensimeter.
