Shapememorypolymer(SMP)isakindofsmartmaterial,whichcanbedeformedintoatemporaryshapeandthenrecovertoitsoriginalpermanentshapeunderanexternalstimulussuchasheat,light,electricity,ormoisture.Comparedwithshapememoryalloy,SMPhasmoreadvantagesincludingeasyfabrication,highelasticdeformation,andlowrecoverytemperature[l-3].Therefore,SMPoffersawiderangeofpotentialapplicationsincludingmorphingstructures,textilesandclothingmaterials,biomedicalproducts,anddeployablestructures.Inthisstudy,thesynergisticeffectofcarbonnanotubeandcarbonnanotubepaper(alsoknownasbuckypaper)ontheelectricalactuationofaSMPcompositewasinvestigated.ThebuckypaperwasemployedtofacilitatetheactuationoftheSMPcompositethroughelectricalresistiveheating(Jouleheating).Inordertospeeduptheelectro-activeresponse,boththermalandelectricalconductivityoftheSMPcompositewasimprovedbyincorporatingcarbonnanotubesintotheSMPmatrix.ComparedwiththebaselineSMPmaterial,therecoveryspeedoftheSMPcompositewasincreasedupt01000%.Inordertostudythethermo-mechanicalpropertyoftheSMPcomposite,dynamicmechanicalanalysis(DMA)wasconducted.Inaddition,avision-based3DcoordinatemeasurementsystemwasdesignedtomonitortheshaperecoveryprocessoftheSMPcomposite.Acontrollerwasdesignedtotailortheshaperecoverytoanydesiredshapebyregulatingthecurrentorvoltage.TheshaperecoverytestsoftheSMPcompositeshowthatafastresponseof一90secondswasachieved.Among100shaperecoveryexperiments,adesireddeflectionanglewasachievedwithina5%errorbound,indicatinggoodaccuracyandrepeatabilityoftheshaperecoverybehavioroftheSMPcomposite.
