Phenolformaldehyde(PF)resinhasbeenwidelyusedinbuildingvariousfunctionalstructurematerialsandcoatingsduetotheirhighmechanicalstrength,electricalinsulating,flameretardantresistance,fumingrateaswellastheirdimensionstability.However,itstillsuffersfromthebrittlenessandoxidationrisksbecauseoftheirspecialmethylene-phenolicstructure.ThusmanyresearchersarenowtryingtofindgoodsolutionstoenhancethemechanicalandthethermalpropertiesofPFresin.GrapheneOxide(GO),oneofthemostimportantderivativesofgraphene,isstructurallysimilartographene.However,thesurfaceofGOcontainslargenumbersofhydrophilicfunctionalgroups,suchascarbonyl,carboxyl,epoxyandhydroxyl,whichaffordedGOwithexcellentprocessability,dispersibilityandthecompatibilitywiththepolymer,thusGObecomesapromisingfunctionalnano-reinforcingmaterialforvariouspolymerandorganicmoleculestoapproachdifferentadvancedapplications.Inthiswork,grapheneoxide(GO)wasincorporatedintophenolformaldehyde(PF)resinbyin-situpolymerization.ThemorphologiesandpropertiesofGOsheetswerecharacterizedbyFTIR,XRD,andAFMmethods.ThestructureandpropertiesoftheGO/PFnanocompositeswerecharacterizedusingFTIR,XRD,DSCandTGAmethods.EffectsofGOcontent,reactiveconditions,andblendingmethodsonthestructureandpropertiesofGO/PFnanocompositeshavebeenstudied.ItwasfoundthatduetothewelldispersionofGOsheetsinpolymermatrixandthestronginterfacialinteractionbetweentheGOsheetsandPFmatrix,thethermalstabilityandthermalmechanicalpropertiesoftheGO/PFnanocompositesweregreatlyenhanced.
