Carbonnanotubeisanewkindofcarbonmaterial.SynthesisofcarbonnanotubesfromV-typepyrolysisflameisakindofnoveltechnique.Itneedssimplelaboratoryequipmentsandnormalatmospherepressure.TheV-typepyrolysisflameexperimentalsystemisintroduced.CarbonsourceisthecarbonmonoxidewhichiscarriedtothemiddlepipeofV-typepyrolysisflamecombustor.Heatsourceisfromacetylene/airpremixedflame.Pentacarbonyliron,servedascatalyst,istransportedbyspray-pyrolysismethodintotheburner.Thecarbonnanotubeswerecharacterizedbyscanningelectronmicroscopeandtransmissionelectronmicroscope.Thediameterofcarbonnanotubesisapproximate20nmanditslengthisdozensofmicrons.Theimpactofthetemperature,reactantcompositionandcatalystwasanalyzedtorevealtheruleofcarbonnanotubegrowth.Carbonnanotubeswithgoodformandlessimpuritycanbecapturedwhenthetemperaturewasfrom800℃to1000℃andcarbonmonoxide/hydrogen/heliummixedgasflowwassupplied.Theeffectivediameterofpentacarbonylironnanoparticlesisapproximatefrom5nmto20nmintheprocessofcarbonnanotubeformation.MechanismofcarbonnanotubebaseontheV-typepyrolysisflamemethodwasproposed.Thecarbon“dissolved-proliferation-separateout”theorycanbeusedtoexplainhowthepentacarbonylironcatalysescarbonmonoxidetoformcarbonnanotubes.
