Electrorheological(ER)characteristicsofERfluids(ERF)containingbacterialcellulose(BC)particlesinsiliconeoilwasinvestigatedasafunctionofparticlewatercontent,DCelectricfieldstrengthandparticleconcentration.ItwasfoundthattheexistenceofwaterinBCparticlesstronglyinfluencedtheperformanceofwater-activatedERFbasedonBCparticles.Around8.8wt%water,yieldstressreacheditsmaximumvalveof1118Paafterwhichitdecreasedwithincreasingwatercontent.Atthesamewatercontent,yieldstressincreasedlinearlywithincreasingineitherelectricfieldstrengthorparticleconcentration.TheERFbasedonBCparticleswasintroducedintothepoly(dimethylsiloxane)(PDMS)gelstoprepareelectricfieldsensitivecompositegel.Electricfieldswereappliedtothesecompositegelsusingflexibleelectrodes.CompressionsofthesegelswithvaryingPDMS/ERFratioswereconfirmedbytheelectrodedisplacement.Itwasfoundthat50/50PDMS/ERFgelexhibitedthemaximumdisplacementof102umat2kV/mmelectricfield.
