Flameretardantnanocompositesweresynthesizedbymelt-blendingphosphoruscontainingcopolymer(PET-co-DDP)withmulti-wallcarbonnanotubes.PET-co-DDPwascopolymerizedwithterephthalicacid(TPA),ethyleneglycol(EG)and9,10-dihydro-10[2,3-di-(hydroxycarbonyl)propyl]-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide(DDP).Thestructureofthenanocompositeswascharacterizedbyscanelectronmicroscopy(SEM).FirepropertymeasurementsbyconecalorimeterrevealedthattheincorporationofmultiwallcarbonnanotubesintoPET-co-DDPsignificantlyreducedthepeakheatreleaseratescomparedwiththePET-co-DDP.Thethermalpropertiesofthenanocompositeswereinvestigatedbythermogravimetricanalysis(TGA).Itwasfoundthatthethermalstabilityofcopolyesterwasimprovedbytheadditionofthemulti-wallcarbonnanotubes.Charformationisthemainfactorfortheseimprovements.Theflameretardantperformancewasachievedthroughtheformationofarelativelyuniformnetworkstructuredflocculelayercoveringtheentiresamplesurfacewithoutanycracksorgaps.Thislayerre-emittedmuchoftheincidentradiationbackintothegasphasefromitshotsurface.
