ThesilicagraftPoly(propylene)(PP)nanocompositesaresuccessfullysynthesizedandtheirthermalpropertiesarestudied.Thesilica-graft-PPnanocompositesarepreparedbyradicalgraftingcopolymerizationofmodifiedsilica,styrene,andmaleicanhydride(MAH)inPP/xylenesolution.TheDifferentialScanningCalorimetry(DSC)resultsshowthatthemeltingpeakandthecrystallinetemperatureshifttohigherwiththeincreaseofsilicacontentduetotheremarkableheterogeneousnucleationeffectofnanoparticlesinPPmatrix.ThethermaldegradationbehaviorofsilicagraftPPnanocompositeswasinvestigatedbyusingnon-isothermalthermogravimetricanalysis(TGA).Theresultsindicatethatthethermalstabilitywassignificantlyimprovedwiththeincreasingofgraftedsilica.Theactivationenergy(Ea)ofsilica/PPnanocomposites,whichisevaluatedbyusingtheFreeman-Carrollmethod,islargethanthatofneatPPandincreaseswiththesilicacontent.Thereasonforthisenhancementmayattributetothephysical-chemicaladsorptionofthevolatiledegradationproductsonthenanoparticleswhichdelaysthevolatilisationoftheproductsgeneratedduringdecomposition,andthestronginteractionbetweennanoparticlesandpolypropylenechains,whichwilllargelyweakenthebreakageofpolypropylenebackbonechains.
