Polyimidesarewidelyusedinthemicroelectronicsandaerospaceindustriesasmaterialsforelectronicpackagingandelectricalinsulatingduetotheirexcellentthermalstability,mechanicalpropertiesandlowdielectricconstants.Owingtothedemandfordenserandfastercircuitsinelectronicdevices,thedissipationofheatgeneratedbyelectroniccomponentshasattractedincreasingattentionandisconsideredtobeacriticalissueforresolution.Here,wereportanovelapproachtofabricatethermallyconductive,insulatedCNT-basedonpolyimidenanocompositesbyaparticularsurfacemodificationofCNTs.SurfacemodificationoftheMWCNTswascarriedoutbyadirectimpregnationtechniqueandwascharacterizedbyTEM,energydispersiveX-rayspectroscopicanalysis(EDX)andX-RayDiffraction(XRD)analyses.BPDA-SDA-ODApolyimidewasusedasthepolymermatrixinthisstudy.DifferentcontentsofMWCNTsormodifiedMWCNTswereusedasconductivefillers.AseriesofMWCNT/PAAandAIO(OH)-MWCNT/PAAsolutionswerepreparedusinganin-situpolymerizationprocessundersonicationwithdifferentMWCNTandAIO(OH)-MWCNTconcentrations.Thenanocompositesweredeterminedbyultraviolet-visiblespectrophotometerSEM,TEMandthermalanalyzer,etc.TheresultsshowedthattheMWCNTsurfacesmodifiedbytheAlO(OH)layereffectivelyavoidedtheformationofanMWCNTelectricallyconductivenetworkinthePImatrix,withthevaluesofRvandRsbeingsixordersofmagnitudehigherthanthatoftheunmodifiedcompositewhentheMWCNTcontentis2.0wt%.ThethermalconductivepropertiesofthemodifiedMWCNT/PInanocompositefilmswereobviouslyimprovedbyverylowloadingsofa-AIO(OH)-MWCNTs,being2.31-timesofthatforthematrixwhenthefillercontentis5wt%.
