OneoftheinterestingcharacteristicsofbiomineralsisthattheyoftenincorporateabiomacromolecularmatrixwhilestilldiffractingX-raysorelectronbeamsassinglecrystals.Thisuniquecombinationofcompositestructureandsingle-crystallinityinspiresanovelapproachtofunctionalizesinglecrystalsbyincorporatingadditivesinside.Here,weexamine,indetail,theinternalstructureofsyntheticcalcitecrystalsgrowninanagarosehydrogelandshowthatthegel-growncalcitecrystals,likebiogeniccalcitecrystals,incorporatethepolymernetworkwithoutdisruptingtheirsinglecrystalnature.Annulardarkfieldscanningtransmissionelectronmicroscopy(ADF-STEM)andelectrontomographyreveala3-dimensionalrandomnetworksofagarosefibers(diametersrangingfromseveralnanometerst020nm)penetratingthroughouttheentirecalcitecrystals.Bothselectedareaelectrondiffraction(SAED)andADF-STEMlatticeimagesdemonstratethateveninthepresenceoflargeamountsoforganicfibers,thecrystalsstillretaintheirsinglecrystalnature.Theagarosenetworkinsideofthecrystalsmightimprovethetoughnessofthecalcitecrystals,asevidencedbynon-angularfeaturesthatwereobservedonfracturedsurfaces.Furthermore,weincorporateAuandFe304nanoparticlesintocalcitesinglecrystalssothatthecrystalschangefromcolorlessanddiamagneticintocoloredandparamagneticsolids.Assuch,thisworkprovidesabio-inspiredstrategyforfunctionlizingsyntheticsinglecrystals.
