Inordertoprepareawood-basedcompositematerialwhich,asatypeofmultifunctionalandnaturalbio-basedmaterial,possessessatisfactorymechanicalproperties,excellentdurability(i.e.,decayresistanceanddimensionalstability),andenvironmentalcharacteristic,thestudypresentsanewmethodwhichisbasedonthecellularstructureofwoodbyinitiatingpolymerizablemonomersforinsitupolymerization.Glycidylmethacrylate(GMA)asamultifunctionalandpolymerizablemonomerwaschosen,andimpregnatedintotheporousstructureofwood.Afterathermal-catalystprocess,thewood-basedcomposite,PGMA/Wood,wasprepared.ThestructureofthismaterialwasanalyzedbySEM,FTIRandXRD;anditsperformancewasalsodetermined.TheanalyzingresultsshowthatGMAnotonlypolymerizedinthecellularstructureinasolidformandamorphousform,whichfullyanduniformlyfilledinwoodcelllumen,butalsosufficientlygraftedontowoodcellwallsinachemicallevel,resultingintightcontactbetweenwoodcellwallsandresultantpolymers(PGMA)withoutanyobviouscracks.Thetestresultsofmechanicalpropertiesshowthatthemodulusofrupture(MOR),modulusofelasticity(MOE),compressionstrength,andhardnessofPGMA/Woodincreasedby82%,122%,139%,and348%overthoseofuntreatedwood,respectively.ThetestresultsofdurabilityshowthatthedimensionalstabilityanddecayresistanceofPGMA/Woodimproved44%and91%thanthoseofuntreatedwood,respectively.Suchcompositecouldbewidelyappliedinthefieldsofconstruction,furnitureandtraffic. |
