Polymersolutionsformingtransientnetworksshowuniquerheologicalproperties.Specifically,mostofthesystemsundergoshearthickeningathighshearrates.Thetransientnetworksystemsmightbedividedintotwoategories.Oneisthesystemscomposedofpolymerchainsandsmall-sizedcrosslinkers,andtheotherisso-calledassociativepolymersystems.Aqueoussolutionsofpoly(vinylalcohol)(PVA)andsodiumboratebelongtotheformer,andhydrophobicethoxylatedurethanes(HEURs)aretypicalofthelatter,bothofwhichshowshearthickening.Untilnowmuchwork,inexperimentalandtheoreticalapproaches,hasbeenmadetoclarifytheoriginoftheshearthickeninginamicroscopiclevel.Theresultsprovideseveralpossibilitiesfortheshearthickening(forexample,non-Gaussianelasticityofpolymerchains),buttheyarestillincontroversy.Theoriginoftheshearthickeninginthemicroscopiclevelmaybedifferentifthecategorydiffers,butcausesinphenomenologicalrheologymustbecommonforbothcategories.Theaimofthisstudyistoexaminetheoriginoftheshearthickeningofanassociativepolymersystembelongingtothelattercategory:moredirectly,tosurveyexperimentalevidencesforlongtimerelaxationscausingtheshearthickeningunderflow.
