Carbonisknowntoexistinanumberofallotropes,whichrangefromthehardestofallknownmaterial,thepureandsinglecrystallinediamond,tothesoft,mainlyamorphous,andveryimpurecarbonintheformofsootorglassycarbon.Threeofthose,diamond,graphite,andofcoursesootareknownsinceancienttimes,whilethemonomolecularformsofcarbon,carbonnanotubesandtheBuckminsterfullereneshavebeendiscoveredonlysomeyearsago.Theseformscanbeclassifiedasthree-dimensional(diamond,carbonblack(CB)andgraphite,Figure1aandb),one-dimensional(singleandmultiwallcarbonnanotubes(SWCNT/MWCNT,Figure1d),andzero-dimensional(Buckminsterfullerene,C60,Figure1e).Onlyrecently,in2004,GaimandNovoselovproducedthetwo-dimensionalformofcarbon,grapheneby“simply”removingsheetaftersheetfromgraphitetogainasinglegraphenelayer(Figure1c);andattentionispaidtothisformofcarbonbecauseofitsextraordinaryfunctionalproperties,inparticularhighelectricalconductivity,andpotentiallowproductioncosts.
