Ionicpolymermembranecastfromthemixtureofpoly(sodium4-styrenesulfonate-co-acrylicacid)(PSA)andpolyvinylalcohol(PVA)wasusedasanelectromechanicalactuator.Surfacemodifiedmulti-walledcarbonnanotubes(MWNTs)wereusedasanefficientelementtoenhancethegrippingofthisactuator.Inparticular,athinlayerofPSAwithathicknessof12nmisuniformlygraftedonthesurfacesofMWNTs.Thewater-solublePSA-g-MWNTscanbehomogeneouslydispersedinthePSA/PVAmembranewithaloadingratioupto20wt%.Suchauniformdispersiongeneratedmanyuniquepropertiesinthiscompositemembrane,includingenhancedtoughness,relativelyconstantionic-exchangecapacityandmuchprominentstructureintegrityafterwateruptake.
