Theincorporationofnanoparticlesintoapolymericmatrix,eitherofacommodityorengineeringplastic,representsamethodofachievingadditional,improvedpropertieswiththeincorporationofonlymodestamountsofmaterial,andthusoftennotcausingabigchangetoprocessingproperties.Itisinterestingthatseeminglyrelatively“non-functional”additivessuchastreatedsilicatenanoclaylayerscanleadtoimprovementsinquiteawiderangeofareassuchasmodulus,toughness,flameretardance,gasandmoisture/solventbarrierandsoon.Increasinglyadditivescanbeusedwhichalsohaveadditionalpropertiessuchasconductivityandelectronemission,forexample,aswellasprovidinganumberoftheotherproperties(theemergenceofgrapheneasananoparticle,forinstance,representsinparttheconductiveshapeanaloguetonanoclays).
