Carbonnanotubes(CNTs)havebeenreportedtosignificantlyreducetheflammabilityofpolymersatverylowloadinglevel.[1]Owingtotheexcellentcarbonizationandflameretardancy,manyintumescentflameretardantshavebeendevelopedtoenhancetheflameretardancyofpolymers.Thus,wetrytofunctionalizetheCNTswithintumescentflameretardant(IFR)withtheaimofimprovingthedispersionofCNTsinpolymermatrixandexpectingasynergisticeffectontheflameretardancyandotherproperties.ThedecorationofCNTswerethroughathree-stepprocess,namely,carboxylationorhydroxylationofpurifiedCNTs,preparationofactiveintermediatesandgraftingIFRontoCNTs.TEMimagesshowedthesizesandmorphologiesbetweenCNTsanditsderivatives,whichprovideddirectevidencesforthefunctionalizationofIFRontoCNTs.[2,3]
