Theuseofnaturalcompoundsinthepreparationofpolymersforbiomedicalapplicationscanimprovethebiocompatibilityandbioacceptanceofthematerials.Bileacidsarenaturalamphiphiliccompoundsofthesteroidfamilythatexistinthegastrointestinaltractinthebodyandhelpinthedigestionoffatbytheformationofmicellaraggregates.Theirfacialamphiphilicity,acid-basepropertiesandtheeaseofchemicalmodificationsmaketheminterestingcandidatesinthepreparationofpolymericbiomaterials.Dentalmonomershavebeenmadefrombileacidsbyattachingmultiplepolymerizabledoublebondstothebiocompounds.Theyhaveshownlowercytotoxicityandlowerpolymerizationshrinkagethanthecommonlyuseddentalmonomers.Wehavealsomadedegradablepolyesterbasedonbileacidsviaentropy-drivenring-openingpolymerizations.Theycanbemadetodisplaytunablemechanicalpropertiesandheterogeneousdegradationbehavior.Themain-chainbileacid-basedpolyestersobtaineddisplaytypicalrubber-likeelasticitybehaviorswithelongationmodulicloselymatchingthoseofsofttissuessuchasarteriesandcartilage.Shapememorypropertieshavebeenobservedwithsuchmaterials.Therigidityofthebackboneandtheadhesivepropertiesofthehydrophilicgroupsalsomakethepolymerspotentiallyusefulinhard-tissueengineering.
