Polycarbonate(PC)hasexcellentmechanicalpropertiesandiseasytoendowflameretardancy.AlkalicompoundswerereportedtobeutilizedasflameretardantforPC[1~3].Inthisstudy,weusedmagnesiumoxide(MgO),alkalineearthmetaloxide,forpreparingPC/MgOcompositesbymeltcompounding.TheflameretardancypropertiesofPC/MgOwereinvestigatedbyLOIandUL-94verticaltest.Figure1showedthatverylowaddition(0.2wt%)ofMgOledtoobviousincrementinflameretardancyofPC.TGAwasusedtocharacterizethethermaldegradationbehavior.AsshowninFigure2,MgOcauseddecreaseofthermalstabilityofPC,therateofweightlossandonsettemperatureofthermaldegradationbecameworseastheamountofMgOincreased.Forexample,theonsetdegradationtemperaturedecreasedfrom4450CforpurePCto4120CforPC/MgO(4.0wt%)composite.Ozawamethod[3~5]wasusedtoestimatethedecompositionactivationenergyasshowninFigure3.ItwasfoundthatMgOincreasedtheactivationenergyofthecompositesinthefullexperimentrangeexceptfortheinitialstage.TheactivationenergywasusedtoexplainthethermaldegradationbehaivourofPC/MgOinthisstudy.
