Nowadays,aliphaticpolycarbonates(APC)haveattractedagreatdealofinterestasbiodegradableandbiocompatiblematerials.Lastyears,lotsofresearchworkshavebeenpublishedonaliphaticpolycarbonatesynthesis.Theyaregenerallysynthesizedby:(1)reactionofaliphaticdiolswithphosgene,(2)ring-openingpolymerizationofcycliccarbonates,(3)copolymerizationofepoxideswithcarbondioxide,or(4)polycondensationofaliphaticdiolswithdialkylcarbonate.Ofthese,method(1)usesextremelyhazardousphosgene.Method(2)and(3)arelimitedtosynthesizegivenstructurepolycarbonates:method(3)isjustfeasibletoaliphaticpolycarbonatederivedfromthree-numberedcyclicepoxide,whilemethod(2)isonlyapplicabletosix-numberedcycliccarbonate.Inaddition,method(2)needshighlypuremonomersandanhydrousconditions.Method(4)avoidstheuseofphosgeneandcouldsynthesizevariousstructurealiphaticpolycarbonatesbyalteringthediols’framework.Asonemonomer,dimethylcarbonateisenvironmentalfriendlyandcommerciallyavailableinlargequantities.Thismethodhasbeenreportedlargelyinliterature[1,2],butthemolecularweightoftheobtainedaliphaticpolycarbonatesislow,whichresultsinpoormechanicalperformance,therefore,theobtainedaliphaticpolycarbonatesarenotapplicableforbiodegradableplastic.
