Incomparisontothemodestimprovementsofmechanicalperformancesandwearresistanceofcarbonnanotubes(CNTs)reinforcedpolymercomposites[l],alignedcarbonnantubes(ACNTs)reinforcedpolymercompositesarehighlyconsideredtobenewinnovativenanomaterialsc2].Inthisstudy,anewcontinuouslyalignedcarbonnanotubes(ACNTs)reinforcedepoxycompositewasfabricatedbywettingasgrownarraysofACNTs.TheuniformdistributionofACNTsintheepoxycompositeswasconfirmedbyhighmagnificationscanningelectronmicroscopyobservations.TheanisotropyinmechanicalreinforcementandwearresistanceofepoxynanocompositefilledwithACNTsindifferentorientationswasstudiedforthefirsttimefromnanoscaletomacroscale.Nanoindentationtechniquesfromnano-microscaleindicatedthatadditionofACNTtopureepoxywashighlyeffectiveinimprovingthehardness,elasticmodulusandscratchresistanceofepoxy,andnanocompositesinantiparallelorientationofACNTshowedthehighestenhancements.Nevertheless,bulkscaletestsshowedthatdifferentfromnanoindentationtestingresults.ACNTinnormalorientationwereobservedthehighestreinforcingeffectofmacroscopiccompressionpropertiesandwearresistanceofpristineepoxy.Owingtoitsload-transfer-favoredstructure,1.Ivol%ACNTsachievedordersofmagnitudehigherimprovementinthewearresistanceofepoxycompositecomparedtorandomlydispersedCNTsinepoxyreportedbeforecl].Basedonmicroscopicobservations,newACNTsrelatedtoreinforcementandwearmechanismswerefurtherproposedanddiscussed.
