Thedesignandfabricationofstrong,lightweight,anddamage-resistantcompositematerialsaremajortopicsofstudiesoncomposite.Biomimetics,adevelopingmultidisciplinaryfield,isnowleadingthefabricationofnovelmaterialswithremarkablemechanicalproperties.Grapheneoxide(GO),agraphenederivate,possessesgoodmechanicalproperty,highaspectratio,andgoodsolubilityinaqueoussolution,indicatinggreatpotentialinnanocompositefields.Inthiswork,bio-inspiredlayeredGO/pol(vinylalcohol)(PVA)nanocompositefilmswithremarkablemechanicalperformancewerepreparedbyanenvironmentalfriendly,bottom-upassemblymethodology.ThestructuralanalysisshowsthealternatepileofinorganicGOplateletsandorganicPVAbinder.Tensiletestsindicatethattheborate-treatedGO/PVAnanocompositefilmsdisplay360MPaofstrength,whichistwofoldtothreefoldhigherthanthatofbiologicalmaterials(e.g.,nacre).ToughnessofGO/PVAnanocompositesisalsoenhancedtofourfoldcomparedwithnacre.Torevealthetougheningfunctionoftheintercalatedpolymerinthenanocomposites,theinfluenceofpolymerwithvariedmolecularweights(Mw‘s)onthefracturemodeofthenanocompositeswassystematicallyinvestigatedthroughquasi-statictensileandcreeptests.ThePVAmoleculeswithhighMwcanconnectmoreneighboringGOplateletsthroughinter-andintra-linkagesthanthosewithlowerMw,whichresultinginefficientstresstransferalongtheGOplanedirection.Thus,tensilestrengthandtoughnessimproved.Thisworkillustratesthefunctionsofbondingtypesbetweeninorganic-organicphasesandintercalatedpolymerwithdifferentMw,sonthemechanicalpropertiesofthelayerednanocomposites,includingstiffness,strength,andtoughness.
