Epoxy-basedcarbonfibercomposites(CFC)arerapidlygainingbroadacceptanceinaeronauticsapplications,includingstructuralparts,becauseoftheweighttheyprovide.ResinTransferMolding(RTM)isanattractiveprocessingtechniqueforsuchapplicationsbecauseitallowsforcomplexshapesanddimensionalaccuracy.EpoxyCFCsuffersfromtoughnessissues,whichcanbealleviatedbytheadditionofthermoplastictougheners.DuetoresinviscositylimitationsimposedbyRTM,tougheningofcompositematricesbyadditionofhighmolecularweightthermoplasticcanonlybecontemplatedviainsitudissolutionofthethermoplasticintroducedinthecompositepreform.TheaimofthisstudyistodemonstratethattheobtainedmicrostructureafterReactionInducedPhaseSeparation(RIPS)ofPolyethersulfone(PES)andPhenoxyinHexFlowRTM6epoxyresincanbeexploitedtoreinforcethermosetcompositematrices.ThefirststepconsistsinevaluatingthedissolutionofPESandPhenoxyfilamentsfromtheirsolubilityintheRTM6precursors.InterdiffusionbetweentheresinprecursorsandthermoplasticisthenassessedinasimplifiedsystemconsideringasinglethermoplasticfilamentincontactwithRTM6byopticalmicroscopycoupledwithRamanspectroscopy.ThemicrostructuresresultingfromRIPSareevaluatedbyScanningElectronMicroscopy(SEM).AcompositepanelwithapreforminterleavedwithbothsolublethermoplasticfilmsisalsoproducedbyRTMtoinvestigatethemechanicalproperties.ApreferentialdissolutionofthelowerTgPhenoxyascomparedtoPESisdemonstrated.Moreover,whilephaseinversioncaneasilybeavoidedforappropriatePhenoxyamountsandadaptedtemperatureprofiles,largercompositioninhomogeneitiessubsistwithPES,whichareresponsibleforpoormechanicalproperties,includingtheGic.
