Inthisstudy,batchreactorexperimentswereperformedtodeterminethedegradationofPNPthroughthermallyactivatedpersulfatewhichwasexpectedtoproducehighlyreactivesulfatefreeradicaI(S04).Severalfactorsincludingtemperature(900C,700C,500C),PHandmetalionswhichprobablyexistedingroundwatersuchasFe2+,Fe3+,Cu2+etconthedegradationofPNPbythethermallyactivatedpersulfatewereevaluated.TheresultsshowedthattheelevationoftemperatureacceleratedtheremovalofPNPinneutralsolutionadjustedbyphosphatebuffer(0.25M).Specialattentionwasgiventounderstandtheeffectsofmetalions.Aseriesofexperimentswithmetalions(Cu2+,Fe2+)atdifferenttemperaturedemonstratedthatFe2+mightbehaveasanintrinsicscavengerofsulfateradicals,accountingforthedecreaseintherateofPNPoxidationunderthermallyactivatedsystem.However,thepresenceofCu2+intheaqueoussolutionpromotedthedegradationofPNPinsomedegree.Additionally,theprecipitateformedinthecourseofreactionbytheexistenceofmetalionsmightaccountforthedecreasingintheremovalofPNPcl].
